The coming shake-out in family-office software

The category has never been more crowded. Consolidation is coming — and the firms that survive will be the ones that own the book of record.

The coming shake-out in family-office software
Knowledge & Decision

There have never been more tools aimed at family offices, and there have never been more family offices confused about which ones they actually need. That combination — abundant supply, uncertain demand — is exactly the setup for a shake-out. Here is how we think it plays out.

01Too many tools chasing the same job

A large share of today's vendors solve overlapping slices of the same problem: aggregate data, show performance, produce a report. Differentiation is thin, and buyers increasingly struggle to tell two demos apart. When a category reaches that point, price pressure and consolidation usually follow.

02The dividing line: who owns the book of record

We expect the durable split to run between tools that merely report and tools that account. A reporting front end is replaceable; a system that holds the authoritative general ledger, the entity structure, and the reconciliation workflow is sticky. Vendors who own the book of record will acquire or outlast the ones who only visualise it.

03What accelerates it

Private assets as table stakes

As allocations tilt toward directs and alternatives, tools that treat private positions as first-class — not as attachments — pull ahead, and the rest look increasingly narrow.

Automation raising the floor

As data ingestion and reconciliation automate, the manual-services moat that protected some providers erodes, and competition shifts to depth of accounting and breadth of structure.

04What it means for buyers

If you are selecting now, weight longevity. Favour the layer that owns your book of record, assume the reporting front end may change hands, and avoid architectures that would strand your data if a vendor were acquired or wound down. In a consolidating market, the safest purchase is the one whose value does not depend on the vendor still being independent in five years.

This is analysis, not a prediction with a date attached. The direction looks clear; the timing never is.
